Day Tour Prehistoric Kilmartin

Day Trip

Prehistoric Stone Circles, the wild West Coast and Inveraray Castle

  • Visit the magnificent castle of the chiefs of the Campbell Clan
  • Explore 5000 year old stone circles & burial sites at Kilmartin
  • Scotland's island dotted West Coast & old Crinan Harbour

Highland scenery at its best as we drive along the high road and the bonny banks of this largest of freshwater stretches in Britain enjoying wide views across to the grandiose heights of Ben Lomond, the most southerly of the 'Munros'.

From Tarbert the route takes us the short distance of 2 miles to the sea (which is where the Vikings hauled there longboats across to roam Loch Lomond) along the shores of Loch Long, the mountainous pass of 'Rest and be Thankful' and the banks of Loch Fyne, famous for its oysters. This tour is a revelation of the inaccessible and rugged terrain typical of the Highlands.

Inveraray - the magnificent 18th century Inverary castle of the Duke of Argyll is a masterpiece of Scottish Georgian Architecture which is splendidly furnished and contains an interesting selection of trophies, memorabilia, documents and weaponry - and an excellent insight into Scottish history.

The pre-historic centre of the region is Kilmartin Glen which, apart from its outstanding beauty is one of the richest archaeological landscapes in Scotland: standing stones, burial cairns, rock art, forts, duns and carved stones. Amoungst these is Dunadd Fort which is likely to have been a royal centre where Scotland's earliest kings were inaugurated.

A brief visit to Crinan with its 18th century harbour and canal is a gloriously beautiful spot from which to admire the intricate western coastline of Scotland.

Come and enjoy!
